An enigmatic tetradrachm of Antiochos III
Lot 1544
SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos III ‘the Great’, 223-187 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.94 g, 3 h), uncertain mint in the East or a contemporary imitation. Diademed head of Antiochos III to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ANTIOXOY Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; to outer left, IΛ (?); to outer right, M. SC -. An interesting piece of charmingly crude style. Struck from slightly worn dies, otherwise, good very fine.

The unusual style of this coin is reminiscent of some issues of Antiochos III struck in the eastern satrapies during his great anabasis. Thus, it is perhaps not a contemporary imitation, but rather an official issue from an uncertain mint, explaining the good silver and the correct weight of the coin
